I extend a warm welcome to one and all to the Maldron Hotel here in Limerick this afternoon for our annual Provincial Ladies Gaelic Football Convention. It is hard to believe another year has passed as I recall the activities of 2008 and plan for 2009.

The playing season began with our under 14 campaign with the B championship kicked the Province into action at Ardmore on Saturday March 15 Waterford hosted Clare and the visitors having a convincing victory 17-12 to 2-06. Also the same day at Cahir Tipperary 3-10 to 2-03 winners over Limerick. On Saturday March 22 round 2 was played at Solohead where Limerick and Waterford went head to head with the Treaty County winners 6-06 to 2-11. Further in the road at Cahir Tipperary winners over Clare 3-10 to 0-06. Round 3 kicked off on Saturday March 29th at Coolmeen where Clare hosted Limerick and winners 2-16 to 1-03 over the Treaty County. The under 14 A campaign began with Kerry comprehensive winners over Tipperary at Na Piarsaigh G.A.A grounds on Saturday April 12 and Cork travelled to Coolmeen and winners over Clare 10-19 to 0-01.Round 2 was played on Saturday April 19 with Kerry hosting Clare at Mountcoal with the Kingdom winners 6-24 to 1-00 while over at Moyle Rovers G.A.A Club Cork defeated the locals 7-14 to 3-02. The pairings decided by the group games with Tipperary and Clare contesting the B final at Coolmeen on Saturday May 3. The wind was a big factor at Coolmeen and a very competitive game was witnessed with both teams giving their all. The lead changed many times before Tipperary took the initiative but they had to defend sternly before running out winners 4-02 to 2-06 and Centre Half Back Treasa McGrath Tipperary named player of the final. The All Ireland B quarter final at Banagher, on Saturday May 25 where Tipperary defeated Tyrone B 6-14 to 1-05. On the day the Munster Champions gave their all but alas had to give second best and were defeated 2-11 to 2-03.  The A final at Ballincollig with Cork having home advantage against the defending Champions Kerry. A superb game of football was served to the spectators and the swift movement of the kingdom attack was joyful to watch. The All Ireland A quarter final played at Banagher on Saturday May 25 where Cork defeated Tyrone A 3-09 to 3-06. Kerry played Sligo in their A quarter final at Mungret on Bank holiday Monday June the 2 and easy winners 7-27 to 1-00. The semi final pairing pitted the Munster finalists together at Carrigadrohid on Saturday June 7 and Kerry continued their march further, winners over Cork 1-12 to 1-04 on a beautiful sunny evening. All Ireland under 14 A final day Thursday June 19 at Claughaun, Limerick. A breezy sunny evening added to the atmosphere of the huge attendance supporting both Kerry and Galway. A fast flowing competitive fully committed band of players gave their all for the Counties and the Munster Champions well tested in many departments however the kingdom answered the call and were crowned All Ireland Champions for the first time since 1999 and Megan O Connell Kerry named player of the final 7-11 to 4-05.

The under 16 championship threw in on Saturday April 5 at Ardmore when Waterford hosted Cork and the visitors facile winners 13-21 to 1-04. Tipperary Hosted Kerry at Cashel and Kerry winners 5-15 to 4-04 while down at Coolmeen Clare eased past Limerick 7-17 to 1-04. Due to a leg injury to the referee extra time could not be played Tipperary 2-14 Limerick 4-08. The semi finals were played on Wednesday June 26 with Kerry hosting Tipperary at Castleisland and winners 3-12 to 2-06. While down at Coolmeen Clare welcomed Cork and were defeated 4-23 to 0-03 by the rebels. The Munster B final was played at Bansha on a wet miserable evening of Wednesday July 7 with Tipperary hosting Clare and after extra time both teams all square Tipperary 3-07 Clare 1-13. The replay was on Friday July 4 at Clareabbey, with the season of summer, the climate was different with a cold wet evening for the replay and on this occasion Tipperary winners 3-10 to 1-09 and Lydia Aherne left Corner forward Tipperary named player of the final. The All Ireland B series kicked in with Tipperary travelling to Rosemount on Tuesday July 8 and their Northern opponents Armagh well beaten Tipperary 3-11 Armagh 0-10. The semi finals on Saturday July 26 with Tipperary playing Mayo at Duggan Park, Ballinasloe with the Munster Champions winners 4-05 to 3-04 while over at Corifin Clare defeated Roscommon 2-12 to 1-07 thus bringing both Munster Counties together to compete for All Ireland success. The All Ireland final was finally played on Sunday September 7 due to the extremely wet summer, at Feenagh, Co. Limerick and on this occasion the tables were turned and Clare winners 4-07 to Tipperary 0-08 with Sarah Bohannon Clare named player of the final. The Munster A final played at Fossa and Cork easy winners over Kerry 5-11 to 0-09 on Wednesday July 2 and Denise Cronin Cork named player of the final. Saturday July 12 Cork got a walk over from Leitrim in the quarter final. Sunday July 13 at Caherlistrane Kerry were well beaten by Donegal in their quarter final game. Saturday July 26 at Duggan Park Ballinasloe Cork winners over Donegal in the semi final. All Ireland final day at Nenagh Cork 0-20 Galway 3-06 and Orla Finn Cork named player of the final.

The Munster minor Championship saw only five Counties participating due to the Waterford County Board notifying Munster of unable to field in this age group due to lack of numbers. However the games began with two rounds played on Wednesday March 19. Limerick hosted Kerry at Neville Park, Rathkeale and gave way to a rampant kingdom 4-18 to 0-03 while in the road at Monaleen Tipperary and Clare required extra time before Clare winners by the minimum 3-16 to 3-15 in a very exciting game. Game 1 of the loser group was played on Wednesday March 26 with Limerick travelling to Monroe the home of Moyle Rovers G.A.A and were defeated by Tipperary 2-13 to 1-07. The minor semi finals were played on Saturday April 19 Kerry hosted Clare at Mountcoal and easy winners 5-18 to 1-06. Back up to Monroe where Cork were hosted by Tipperary and winners 7-14 to 3-02. The Munster minor finals played as a double header at Buttevant. The B final was first to open proceedings and a super game of football was displayed with non stop action to the very end. At the final whistle Clare winners 4-06 to 2-09 over Tipperary and Eimear Considine Clare named player of the final.

The Munster Minor A final had a lot of pundits predicting a tight game but it was not to be as Cork ran out easy winners 9-09 to Kerry 0-10 and Ciara O Sullivan Cork named player of the final. The All Ireland quarter finals played at Banagher on Saturday 29 June where both Munster Counties were in action. Kerry defeated by Tyrone 2-13 to 0-13 and Cork also went out to Ulster Opponents Monaghan who had a two point victory 2-14 to 2-12.

The Munster Junior TG4 was renamed to the Intermediate Championship this was decided due to the County gradings done by Central Council and due to the fact that the Munster Counties would be competing in the All Ireland Intermediate Championship. The championship was played on a knockout basis and Round 1 was played at Bansha where Tipperary hosted Cork and the Premier County winners 1-16 to 2-06. While down at Cooraclare the locals hosted Limerick and eventually got through winners 2-15 to 1-16. The Munster Intermediate TG4 final was played at St.John Park, Hospital on Saturday June 28 with Clare and Tipperary vying for honours. Clare had all the answers on the attack and ran out winners 2-12 to 1-09 and right corner forward Aine Kelly Clare named player of the final. The All Ireland Intermediate Championship had two groups and the three Munster Counties were pooled together in group A. Round 1 Limerick hosted Tipperary at Mungret on Sunday July 6 on a day that had driving rain and hail stones making conditions difficult for both sets of players. Tipperary got the all important goal to emerge winners 1-08 to 0-08. The same day Clare travelled to Clan Na Gael and lost heavily to Roscommon 1-05 to 2-15. Round 2 Clare got back to winning ways when they made the journey to Bansha 2-12 to Tipperary 1-10 on Sunday July 12. Limerick headed to Breffini Park and lost to Cavan 1-11 to 2-15. Round 3 Clare hosted Cavan at Cusack Park on Saturday July 26 and had a comfortable win 2-14 to 1-08 while at Ardfinnan on Sunday July 27 Tipperary defeated Roscommon 0-11 to 0-06. In round 4 Limerick had home advantage against Roscommon at Croagh on Sunday August 3 and again defeat was their lot 0-07 to 1-09. Tipperary were hosted by Cavan at Breffini Park the same day and winners 3-16 to 3-07. Round 5 Clare hosted Limerick at Cusack Park and easy winners 5-19 to 1-05 on Sunday July 10. Both Clare and Tipperary qualify for the All Ireland semi finals and on Saturday August 30 at Pairc Tailteann Tipperary defeated Wexford 0-13 to 1-06 and Edel Hanly Tipperary named player of the game. This game also was televised live by TG4 on Saturday September 6 at O Connor Park Tullamore Clare were extremely lucky to survive against Longford 1-15 to 3-07 in their semi final. Eimear Considine Clare named player of the game. All Ireland final day Sunday September 28 at Croke Park and two Munster Counties contesting the final. Clare and Tipperary would be no strangers to each other and despite the fact that Clare had defeated Tipperary each time they met this year, this would not deter either side from achieving All Ireland Success. The game was only two minutes old when Clare were dealt a severe blow with ace forward Maria Kelly going down injured and it was not long afterwards that she had to leave the field of play due to a severe ankle injury, every players nightmare especially at Croke Park. It was a fiercely competitive final with no quarter given and Clare led at the short whistle. The second half was eagerly awaited and both teams began where they left off and with Angie McDermott leading the Premier County the game began to swing in their favour. Edel Hanly was in superb form both from placed balls and from open play and there was no stopping their forages up field. Clare tried their best but seemed to run out of gas and the All Ireland title went to Tipperary 0-14 to 1-08 and Angie McDermott Tipperary named player of the final.

The Munster TG4 senior with three Counties competiting began on Saturday May 10 when Waterford hosted Kerry at Kill and the visitors 3-14 to 1-07 winners. The Munster final on Saturday July 12 at Pairc Ui Rinn with the defending champion’s easy winners 1-23 to 2-07 and Briege Corkery Cork named player of the final. The All Ireland qualifier Round 1 began on Sunday July 27 with Waterford and Armagh going head to head at St.Lomans, Mullingar with Armagh winners 1-11 to 0-08. Waterford play Meath in a relegation game for senior status and this game is scheduled for January 2009. Round 2 on Saturday August 9 Kerry and Down competed at St. Lomans, Mullingar and the kingdom winners 1-14 to 3-06 and this put Kerry into the quarter final which was played at Croke Park on Saturday August 16. The weather again was not very kind to the teams with driving rain and high winds making conditions somewhat difficult. Kerry played some good football but alas had to settle for second when finishing by the minimum to Mayo 1-14 to 2-12. On Saturday August 23 at Hyde Park the defending Champions put their title on the line against Galway in their quarter final game. Galway had them in all sorts of bother and for some wayward shooting and the magnificent goal keeping by Corks Elaine Harte the Western girls could have been long out of sight by the short whistle. However Cork as Champions regrouped and tuned into the task on hand and eventually came through comfortably 2-11 to 1-07 and Juliet Murphy Cork named player of the game. The All Ireland semi final on Saturday September 6 at O Connor Park, Tullamore Cork faced Tyrone and much was expected of Tyrone, however as the game unfolded they were in a different class from the champions and Cork eased through 4-18 to 0-11 and Nollag Cleary Cork named player of the game. This game also saw right corner forward Valerie Mulcahy receive a red card from referee Liam McDonagh towards the end  ruling her out of the All Ireland final. However the Cork County Board appealed the red card and from the referees report she received a two week match ban freeing her up for the All Ireland but ruling herself out of a nomination of an All Star. The All Ireland final pitted the defending Champions against Monaghan who were appearing in a senior final for the first time since 2002. Cork entered the game overwhelming favourites and despite the score line Cork were made work all the way and finished winners 4-13 to 0-11 and Valerie Mulcahy Cork named player of the final.

The Aisling McGing memorial championship began with five Counties participating and ensured competitive competition for girls not making their senior panel. Cork opened their season with a home game against Dublin at Nemo Rangers on Sunday June 22 and started on a winning note defeating the Dubs 1-10 to 2-06. Round 2 Cork travelled to Urlingford and defeated Kildare easily 1-28 to 1-00 on Sunday July 13. Round 3 Cork hosted Galway at Mallow on Sunday July 20 and had an easy victory winners 5-28 to 0-01 over Galway. Round 3 on Sunday August 24 Cork travelled to Ashbourne and played Meath and again the Southern County winners 5-13 to 0-06 thus putting Cork into the final which was played on Saturday September 20 at Toomevarra and Cork were opposed by Dublin who previously pushed them to the limit just coming up short by a point. A great game was predicted and both teams did not disappoint with a free flowing action packed hour of all that is good about Ladies Gaelic football with Cork winners 1-13 to 0-11 points and Aine Sheehan Cork named player of the final.

The Munster Vhi Healthcare Junior club championships kicked off on Saturday September 20 with the first quarter final at Glanworth of both Abbeyside (Waterford) and Fr. Casey’s (Limerick) with the Deise Champions prevailing 2-12 to 1-09, the second quarter final was played at Parteen on Sunday October 5 fixed for Claughaun but just before midnight on Saturday 4 the pitch was declared unplayable by the Limerick club. Nevertheless Sadie Quinn and the Parteen club pulled out all the stops ensuring the game had a home and Na Gaeil (Kerry) winners 2-11 to 0-04 over Upperchurch Drombane (Tipperary). The semi finals with the first played on Saturday October 4 at Parteen and Kilmihill (Clare) had a one point victory over Liscarroll (Cork) 1-06 to 1-05. The second semi final was played on Saturday October 11 at Ballygibblin and at the final whistle Na Gaeil winners 2-11 to 2-06 over Abbeyside. The Munster junior Vhi club final was played on Sunday October 19 at Newcastlewest G.A.A. pitch on a misty wet day with a little wind. Pitch conditions were very good and the standard of football served by both clubs was high, exciting and enjoyable. The winner was in doubt to the final whistle and teams, mentors and supporters were kept guessing to the end. The outcome of the game was decided when the shrewd management of Kilmihill instructed Eimear Considine to full forward and in her short time on the edge of the square caused a lot of anxious moments for the Na Gaeil defence before pushing her side over the winning line by the minimum to claim the title 2-08 to 2-07. Player of the final Eimear Considine Kilmihill. The Munster junior Club Champions travelled to Maynooth on Sunday November 9th and were opposed by the locals finishing on the right side of a fiercely competitive game in the semi final of the All Ireland series 3-06 to 3-05. The All Ireland Vhi junior club final was played at Tuam Stadium on Saturday November 29 and the Munster champions got a dream start and led comfortably at half time with the opposition of Knockmore (Mayo) not registering a score. However games are won and lost over the hour and Kilmihill pushed on further in the second half before Knockmore came from their slumber still Kilmihill did not ease up as they were in no mood to surrender a lead they controlled over the hour and finished the game scoring at the death easy winners 4-06 to 1-04 and midfield supreme Una Downes Vhi Healthcare player of the final. Kilmihill played their own bit of history when they became the first Clare club to win an All Ireland Club Championship title and this they did in style.

The Munster Vhi Healthcare Intermediate club championships opened on Saturday September 20at Glanworth where Athea (Limerick) had an easy win over Waterford side Ballyduff 8-16 to 0-04. Tipperary did not have a club representative in the intermediate championship due to their County championship not completed thus giving the Kerry champions a walk over into the semi final. Semi final one was played at Rathmore on Saturday October 4 and after a very exciting game Ballingeary Inchigeela defeated Castleisland Desmonds (Kerry) 3-06 to 2-08. The second semi final did not take place until October 18 due to the Clare County final not being played despite the many correspondents of deadlines and with appeal after appeal so finally at Glanworth Athea defeated The Banner 2-10 to 0-06. The Munster Vhi Intermediate final was played on Saturday November 1 at Na Gaeil G.A.A. pitch, Tralee and we appreciate the efforts of Seamus Moriarty, Aidan Carmondy and their team of club officials who worked trojantly to ensure the venue was top class for the final. Despite the pitch officially closed the club made it available to the Association and the integration process is alive and well in Munster. Ballingeary Inchigeela v Athea both teams gave their all with Ballingeary Inchigeela finishing the stronger to be crowned Munster intermediate champions 3-08 to 1-05 and Carmel McCarthy Ballingeary Inchigeela Vhi Healthcare player of the final. The All Ireland semi final had Ballingeary Inchigeela travelling away to Killoe of Longford when the historians of Munster realised there was a discrepancy and that Munster had a home game, in checking with the record books, this was the case. So the game eventually went ahead at Ballingeary on Sunday November 18 and after extra time the Munster champions prevailed by a goal 1-11 to 0-11 for Killoe. The All Ireland Vhi intermediate club final was played at Banagher on Sunday November 30 and despite giving their all the Munster club were out of their depth and were defeated 3-06 to 1-02 by Emyvale (Monaghan).

The Munster Vhi Healthcare Senior club championship opened on Sunday October 12 at Monroe home of Moyle Rovers G.A.A. pitch with Ballymacarbry (Waterford) and East Kerry competing in the Munster B final with Ballymacarbry giving an exhibition of point scoring with a tally of 25 over the hour to take the honours as opposed to East Kerry  9 points. Munster A final at Glanworth on Saturday October 18 Inch Rovers (Cork) v Ballymacarbry and underfoot conditions heavy. Inch Rovers the defending Provincial champions started as they meant business however the Waterford champions had a number of raids down field but to no avail. Inch Rovers applied a lot of pressure on the Ballymacarbry defence and eventually the constant pressure paid off with a number of points on the score board before a green flag was raised. The outfield battles continued and the failure of Ballymacarbry to convert frees added to their down fall. Inch Rovers were worthy winners 2-14 to 0-08 and Amy O Shea Inch Rovers Vhi Healthcare player of the final. The All Ireland semi final played at Killeagh on Saturday November 8 with driving wind and constant rain. Credit to both Clubs for their commitment to the game with the whole hearted display by their players to the large number of supporters at the game. Inch Rovers who were always in control of the game defeated Mountmellick Sarsfields 2-11 to 1-05 and they had achieved their goal of reaching their second Club All Ireland. The All Ireland final on Sunday November 23 at O Connor Park, Tullamore was a repeat of 2007 when Inch Rovers had to give way to Carnacon. The 2008 Munster champions were at full strength had no injury worries and the girls unavailable the previous year all ready and eager for the throw in. Inch Rovers totally dominated the opening half of the game and could have been further ahead at the interval 1-06 to 0-03. The second half they took off at a ferocious pace and it took the Connacht champions over ten minutes of the second half before they kicked into gear. Carnacon took the initiative and whittled the lead to the minimum before going ahead a lead they never relinquished. Heartbreak for the Cork girls due to the fact they were in control for the majority of the final. Inch Rovers 2-06 Carnacon 2-11.

He first began coaching ladies Gaelic football in 1976 and in the intervening 32 years he has left a legacy and a record that may never be equalled. First he built Ballymacarbry into the greatest Club team the Country has ever seen, miles ahead in the roll of honour with an incredible 10 All Ireland club titles.
