In the absolutely modern facilities of Clonakilty G.A.A. Club, 6 counties came to do battle for the Munster Club Scallys SuperValu 7 a side. Yes, someone got it wrong again and you guessed it, the weatherman promised sun but we got rain, but did anyone care? No, we were all up for a good day.
It was to be a hectic day as 42 teams had entered and with 5 cancellations it seemed as if the 37 teams were all around the registration table at the one time but they didn’t bargain on our administrator Maire Halvey and president Dan O’Mahony running things like clockwork and not letting the need for shelter from the rain disrupt the plan for the day and all teams were sorted and into their respective dressing rooms in a flash.
There were 19 junior teams, 6 intermediate teams and 12 senior teams. All grades were hotly contested. It was fantastic to get around to all the pitches, seeing all the teams in all the competitions and enabling me to draw to only one conclusion that Ladies Gaelic Football is getting stronger in Munster.
Then to the battles, the competition was high all round with last year’s senior winners Ballymacarbry from Waterford going for 2 in a row. Last year’s junior winners Listowel Emmets were now competing at intermediates and looking forward to the new challenge. There was 5 new junior clubs taking part for the first time Dripsey, Youghal, Ballyporeen, St Ailbes Emly and Ballyphehane, no doubt learning a lot and hoping to see them back next year.

All presentations were made by Niamh Scally daughter of our sponsor Eugene and also attended the presentation was Margaret O Rourke of Scallys who addressed the patrons “confirming their delight of being involved in the MLGFA club 7 a side”
On a sad note our thoughts go out to the family and friends of the Tadgh Mac Carthaigh club on the death of one of their members on Friday and to the Dripsey club on the death of one of their members this week. Also I must mention one of our referees Ian O’Brien who had a serious accident on Friday, who rang from his hospital bed to Pat Piggott our Referee Co-ordinator to make his apologies. This is why Ladies Gaelic Football is on the up and up with dedicated people like this. We in Munster, Cork and all in Ladies Gaelic Football wish him a speedy recovery.
An enormous thank you must go to the volunteers of the Clonakilty LGF & G.A.A. Club who facilitated us with car park attendants, grounds personnel and helpers at all levels. To all volunteers of MLGFA who again willingly gave of their valuable time also all referees. To the Southern Star whose photographer was on site all day.  Last but not least, the ladies who fed more than 500 people on the day. A big thank you as the much needed hot dinners and especially the in demand soup and tea never ran out.
I could go on and on because I can’t say enough about the fantastic day had by all and I am so looking forward to next year with the help of god and hopefully this time the weatherman.

Yours in sport,
Mick Myers MLGFA PRO
