2012 Jim Kennedy Cup

7-1-12
Rd 1
Cork 3-17
Waterford 3-7

The first game of the inaugural Jim Kennedy Cup competition kicked off in Araglin on Saturday  with the Kingpins of Munster  Cork and Waterford facing up to each other. An experienced Cork team started well with Norita Kelly back in midfield, two points apiece  from Val Mulcahy ,Rhona Buckley and points from Laura Cronin and centre forward Laura Mc Mahon propelled them into a six point to one lead with the Waterford point from Linda Wall.  Good defensive work by the Cork backs put the Waterford forwards under pressure and forced them to kick wide when the got within range. Midway through the half Waterford were beginning  to settle and points from Hannah Landers and Michelle Ryan and a great goal from Linda Wall brought them right back into the game to leave only a point between the teams. Amy Jordan was having a great game for Waterford pulling off some great saves but she was able to do little to prevent Cork`s open goal five minutes before half time when a Ciara O Sullivian left foot shot dipped under the crossbar, Cork followed up with a great long range point from centre back Brid Stack and a Ciara O Sullivan point. An Aileen Wall free kick left the half time score 1-9 to 1-4 . Cork brought on their subs for the second half but kept up the pressure  with points from Jess O Shea and Val Mulcahy and another from Laura Mc Mahon following a great solo run. On 35 min a great passing movement by Cork had Val Mulcahy free in front of goal and she buried to the roof of the net.  A second goal by Linda Wall gave Waterford some hope, they also had Aoife Mc Govern and Michelle playing well around mid-field  . Michelle Ryan was winning the high ball kicked into the forward line and she struck over two good points .Lisa Crowley had replaced Elaine Harte in the Cork goal and she brought off a great save to halt the Waterford revival and when Doireen O Sullivan cooly slotted home Cork`s third they moved to double scores. Aileen Wall had been one of Waterford’s  best players and she capped a fine performance with a goal five minutes from the end. Two Valarie Mulcahy  frees and and  a Jessica O Shea point left Cork winners with a 10 point margin 3-17 to 3-7. Cork move onto the semi-final while Waterford await the loosers of the Mary I and IT Tralee game to be played next  Wednesday in Mary I GAA grounds in Limerick.
