Development Squads

Development squads can play a key role in the future of your county squads and it is important to have the appropriate structures in place to ensure the objectives of these squads are achieved. It is recommended to have squads at Under 13, Under 15 and Under 17 levels in your county. The time frame of these squads will vary during the period from June to December. It is important to start your development squad system


  • Identify and develop talent

  • Provide quality coaching

  • Assist with county squad selection

  • Increase standards of football

  • Qualification of coaches

  • Create awareness of good coaching structures and methods

  • Create good club/ county team relations

  • Eliminates need for trials for county squads

Role of County Board

  • Give clubs an introduction to development squad process and plan for the 10 weeks

  • Identify Co-ordinator early in the year

  • Ensure co-ordinator receives quality induction to programme

  • Identify quality team of mentors for dev squads early in the year

  • Put plan of action in place regarding coaches, venues, facilities, selection of players

  • Provide induction to the squads for all coaches well in advance of programme commencing

  • County Boards to give full support to programme in all aspects of the programme
