MLGFA PP Junior C Final 2011-12

In the Post Primary Schools Junior C Munster Final, Kilrush Community College of Clare met Loreto of Clonmel, Co. Tipperary. Played at Neville Park,  Rathkeale on January 27th, the game was won in the first half when a very sharp Loreto side had racked up 3-5 before the girls from West Clare got on the board after 25 minutes. Kilrush opened with the more nervous start conceding several frees but  Meghan Shanahan opened the Clonmel account with a goal on four minutes and this was followed by a Daniela Di Ruzza goal from the ground, a minute later. Kilrush launched several forays into the Loreto danger zone with captain Aoife O’Gorman leading Ronya Baumann, Aine Ryan and Jenny Browne but failed to capitalise letting the Tipp side drift away. The next wave of Loreto pressure saw Shanahan return with a point on nine minutes and two conceded frees saw points from Sarah Ryan & Aoife Dunne, 2-3 for Clonmel at the end of the first quarter. Kilrush were beginning to drive into the Loretto defence with more vigour but not before a strong Sarah Ryan racked up her second and third points. When Lauren Guiry tacked on another to make it 3-5 for the Clonmel side, Kilrush decided enough was enough and finished the half with a strong passage of play. The resulting two frees were converted by Aine Browne leaving a twelve point gap 3-5 to 0-2 when Kerry referee Sean Joy blew for the break.

To under pin their determination, Loreto’s Dunne pointed twice within three minutes of the restart and when Sarah Everard pointed on seven minutes, all six forwards were on the board. Undeterred, Kilrush struck at the heart of the Tipp defence but when Aoife Carraig and Aine Browne were foiled by two outstanding saves by goalie Heather Hammond it looked like Kilrush had left it too late to test the Loretto resolve. However, Jenny Ryan was back with Kilrush’s third point in forty two minutes of play and Aine Browne took her third successful free to bring it to 0-4 to 4-7 in favour of Loretto at the end of the third quarter. The remainder of the game continued to be fast paced to the end as both teams swapped scores. West Clare captain Aoife O’Gorman who was tireless all day led the final attacks and pointed to inspire Nicole Burke likewise and Sarah Shannon followed up with a top drawer goal to boot. However, these scores were interspersed by Loreto points from Shanahan, Dunne & Power before Sean Joy called for the ball on sixty minutes.
Loreto’s plan to convert every attack paid off as they accumulated scores a plenty. Kilrush didn’t manage to yield the same return and were never a threat to the Tipperary girls.
