MLGFA PP Senior B final 2012

Effin was the location of the Post Primary Senior B Final on January 24th when St. Flannans of Ennis and Colaiste Choilm of Ballincollig met to contest the title.
The Clare side brought their best game on the day and dominated the first half proceedings. In the second half, Colaiste Choilm mounted a strong resurgence with some high scoring but Flannans kept apace and ended up comfortable winners.
From the throw-in Flannan’s had pointed through an Alana O’Brien point which was followed up rapidly by an Aoife Keane converted free, an early sign of the pressure they were to mount on the Colaiste Choilm defences. Meabh MacManamon and Jessica Hennigan worked some lovely ball out of the Cork defences freeing Laura Hayes on this occasion to take their first point of the game. Flannan’s captain Sinead O’Keeffe lead a strong half back line with Aisling Corbett and Rae Wall absorbing a lot of pressure and working very well with mid-fielders Alanna O’Brien and player of the match Niamh Markham.

So it wasn’t long before the Ennis side were back with a goal from Eleanor Carey on ten minutes and two points by Markham to follow. Colaiste Choilm were back with a well taken point by Niamh Byrne aided by Emer Scally but that work was negated by a low rasping goal at the other end by Aoife Keane who shortly thereafter converted her second free to bring it to 2-6 to 0-2 on twenty minutes with Flannan’s firmly in the driving seat. Two additional points from Nikki Kaiser and O’Brien again were snatched before Sinead O’Sillivan and Emer Scally each raised the Ballincollig school’s tally to four points. Before referee Jason Mullins of Limerick blew for the break Aoibheann Malone and Orla Devitt, involved in nearly every attack had pointed and goaled respectively to push the Clare side into a 3-8 to  0-4 lead.
Devitt resumed as she finished the first half with an impressive point within the minute and within five minutes, Flannans went up by a further 2-1 thanks to Keane (point), Malone (goal) and Kaiser (goal). Undeterred, Colaiste Choilm midfielder and captain Maeve Flynn and Aobha Hickey held their ground to launch an offensive that saw two unanswered points from Emer Scally again and Roisin O’Mahony and a well-placed goal from Elaine Scally. From this point on, each side inflicted damage every time they appeared in the danger zone, Aoife Keane adding two more points to her tally, one a free. Colaiste Choilm responded with two top drawer goals from Laura Cleary and Emer Scally, bringing the gap to eleven points. Points from Aoibheann Malone and Sophie Hanna and a characteristic rocket goal from Nikki Kaiser seemed to mark the end for the Cork school but they fought back with a further goal and two points from the excellent Emer Scally. The Ennis school had no shortage of vigour however and recouped two more points via Malone and Markham (who scooped the player of the match award) before referee Mullins called it a day.
A dominant first half performance by a more balanced St Flannans team, managed by Emer Murphy–Considine and Gary Brennan, secured the title for the Clare girls but the resurgence by Colaiste Choilm made this a very entertaining Munster B Final. A lot of this Flannans team will also feature in the upcoming Munster Ladies Football Junior B Final in what is already a great year for ladies football in a hugely successful hurling and camogie school.
