2012 Kennedy Cup
University Of Limerick: 12-
Mary immaculate College: 0-
The inaugural year, of this new Munster senior ladies football competition saw local city rivals University of Limerick (U.L.) up against, Mary Immaculate College (Mary I) in the second round. It was played in the newly built all weather pitch that has become part of the Universities excellent sporting facilities. The game itself was a keenly contested affair right up until the final whistle, although the score line might not suggest as much Mary I really battled hard and were quiet unlucky to have not put more scores on the board. However there was no hiding the fact that they were much the weaker side against a U.L. team graced with virtually an entire panel of inter county players really portrayed their difference in class. Right from the throw in the began to assert themselves on this encounter with severe authority and with literally the first attack of the game the managed to register the first of their twelve goals on the evening through one of the stand out players on show, centre forward Eimear Considine. They quickly increased their lead with a point from Niamh O’Dea after she had been put through with an excellent pass from Considine. Mary I’s attitude and work rate was commendable throughout and they managed to settle a few nerves and respond well to their shaky start with an excellently worked team score that was gracefully finished by crafty corner forward Orla Finn, putting a fine finish on an excellent move. However that was as good as it got as for a few minutes as U.L. increased their lead further with a goal and a point from the impressive Aine Tighe as well as goals from Gillian O’Connor Considine again and wing forward Claire Keohane. Mary I responded to these scores with some of their own thanks to points from the aforementioned Finn and the intelligent and hardworking Naomi Campbell. U.L. however managed to turn their dominance in possession in to scores quiet easily and by half time they had the game over as a contest as they lead 7-
